The Long-Term Picture: Alcohol and Cardiovascular Disease
Many patients taking lisinopril have it prescribed specifically because of elevated cardiovascular risk — hypertension, heart failure, or diabetes-related kidney protection. Alcohol's long-term cardiovascular effects are dose-dependent. While light-to-moderate drinking has historically been associated with modest reductions in cardiovascular risk (a finding that is now much more contested in the scientific literature), heavy drinking is unambiguously associated with cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, stroke, and worsened hypertension.
For a patient taking lisinopril for heart failure, for instance, regular heavy alcohol use can directly worsen the underlying cardiac muscle function — essentially working against the primary reason for taking the medication.
