Pill Identification by Color & Shape
Trying to identify a pill? Start with the two most visible characteristics — color and shape — then use the imprint code (the letters, numbers, or symbols pressed into the tablet surface) for a positive identification. U.S. law requires all prescription tablets to carry a unique imprint. Each guide below lists the most commonly encountered medications for that color and shape combination, along with known imprints to help narrow your search.
How Pill Identification Works

Find the imprint: Look at both faces of the tablet or capsule. The imprint is stamped or printed on the surface — it may include letters, numbers, a logo, or a combination. Use good lighting or a phone camera.

Use the identifier: Enter the imprint plus the pill's color and shape in PillID's free tool. The more information you provide, the more precise the result. The imprint is the single most important field.

No imprint? A U.S. prescription tablet without an imprint is unusual and may be a supplement, a compounded drug, or a foreign medication. None of these can be reliably identified by appearance alone.
